Liu Kang

Liu Kang was a Singaporean artist famous for his Balinese-themed figurative paintings. He was a founding member of the Singapore Art Society, and was credited with developing the Nanyang Style. Born in Fujian of China, Liu spent his early years in Malaysia, studied art in Shanghai and Paris, and taught art in Shanghai during the 1930s and later settled in Singapore in 1942. Together with Chen Chong Swee, Chen Wen Hsi and Cheong Soo Pieng, they went on a Bali field trip to explore visual expression with SE Asian flavor which Liu gained much inspiration during the trip. Liu awarded the Public Service Star by the Singapore Government in 1970 and in 1996 with the Meritorious Service Medal.
