Gerard Pieter Adolfs (1897-1968) Artists
Gerard Pieter Adolfs was born on 1898 in Semarang, Central Java. He received his first artistic inspirations while in Java and later studied architecture in Amsterdam. He designed houses in Yogyakarta, Solo and Surabaya after graduating but soon he find his interest in painting. He was already well-known as a talented advertising illustrator, when in 1924 he was first introduced to the public of Yogyakarta as a painter, water-colourist and graphic artist. The main subjects of his work were scenes of Java, Bali, Japan and of North Africa (market sceneries, cock-fights, landscapes and townscapes).
